Lithophanes
are Engraved Translucent Porcelain Artworks. First invented
in France in 1872. The image is created by light shining through
the different thicknesess of the translucent, kiln-fired porcelain;
the thicker areas appear darker and the thinner areas appear
brighter. A lovely "sepia" tone which highlights
the beauty of the image.
